Description: Seven land uses were extracted within the county, including: home sites, sites, grasslands, irrigated agriculture, right of ways, county roads, and waste lands. These land uses were extracted using a combination of current and historical FSA NAIP and DOQ aerial imagery and current Natural Resources Conservation Service SSURGO soil survey data. All land use data was collected at a maps scale of 1:4,800 and higher to ensure a high level of accuracy. All available FSA NAIP and DOQ aerial imagery was acquired, and was used to identify each land use within the county. Imagery was available for the following years: 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2006 (Color-Infrared), 2007, and 2009. The 2009 color imagery was used as the primary source for identifying land use to ensure that the most current land uses were extracted. However, all available imagery was referenced in situations where land uses fluctuated from year to year (i.e. waste areas, or conversion of grassland to agricultural land and vice versa). Although waste areas were extracted using the previously described method, the final land use feature layer will only include waste areas identified by current NRCS SSURGO soil surveys. The purpose of this was to achieve the project goal of incorporating the standardized NRCS soil data into the current county assessor database. GIS Western Resources, Inc. will attempt to work with the NRCS in order to get waste land data extracted for this project incorporated into existing SSURGO soil survey data.
